The National Sports Medicine Institute Sports Physical Therapy Residency is a developing residency program through the APTA and ABPTRFE.

Update: As of March 2024 our program has been granted Candidacy status with the ABPTRFE. Candidacy status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation. Achieving candidacy status is not an indication that ABPTRFE will grant initial accreditation. Participants who graduate from a program in candidacy status are not deemed to have completed an accredited program.

We are now accepting Sports Physical Therapy residents.

This program will accept 1 physical therapist per year. The mission of the physical therapy residency is to develop the post graduate physical therapist to become an integral part of a sports medicine multi-disciplinary team through interprofessional mentorship, didactic learning, advanced certifications, evidence based clinical skills for off- and on-field athlete management and contribution to sports medicine research for the benefit of athletes at all levels of competition.

Objectives

  • To advance the knowledge of the physical therapist  in the sports clinical and pre/post-surgical setting
  • To prepare for the sports certified specialist board exam
  • To obtain their CSCS
  • To participate as a member of the multidisciplinary care team for the conservative and surgical care of the athlete.
  • To obtain and disseminate evidence-based education
  • To conduct outcomes-based research within an orthopedic and sports setting
  • To provide community outreach to local, and potentially national and international events
  • To observe a sports surgeon in clinical and surgical treatment of the injured athlete.

The vision of the NSMI post-professional residency training program is to cultivate a premier national training environment for physical therapist interested in maximizing their potential as clinicians in the sports medicine specialty.
