Evaluation and treatment of the overhead athlete requires a detailed understanding of both form and function. The overhead athlete can accelerate their upper extremity to speeds that routinely exceed 7000 degrees/second.  Although much discussion of the overhead athlete focuses on the shoulder and elbow our approach to evaluating and treating includes the entire kinetic chain from the ground up. This includes looking at an athlete’s scapular (shoulder blade) stability, core strength and balance, and lower extremity flexibility.

We examine common areas of dysfunction in the overhead athlete in the context of sport specific movements in baseball pitching, tennis serving, football throwing, volleyball serving/spiking and even lacrosse and swimming movements.

Overhead athletes include:

  • Baseball/softball players
  • Football quarter/running backs
  • Basketball players
  • Volleyball players
  • Soccer goal keepers
  • Swimmers
  • Tennis players
  • Lacrosse players
  • Shotput and pole-vaulters
  • And many more
