Dr. David Johnson is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed his Orthopaedic surgical residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY, a premier hospital for Orthopaedic care in the United States and abroad.

During his residency, Dr. Johnson treated many elite level athletes including members of Major League Baseball’s New York Mets and the National Football League’s New York Giants. After residency, he attended the world-renowned Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, CO where he completed a shoulder, knee, and sports medicine fellowship. While at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic, Dr. Johnson had extensive experience in treating elite level athletes including care for the MLB Colorado Rockies, the NFL Denver Broncos, and the United States Ski and Snowboard Team.

Dr. Johnson has been in practice in Northern Virginia since 2002.  In 2006 Dr. Johnson co-founded The National Sports Medicine Institute (NSMI) to provide a state-of-the-art sports injury and evaluation clinic for the recreational and professional athletes.  In 2012 he helped to establish the National Sports Medicine Foundation (NSMF), a nonprofit organization with a mission to enrich the quality of sports medicine and Orthopaedics through education, research, and technology.  He is currently an assistant team physician for the Baltimore Orioles as well as their minor league affiliate, the Frederick Keys. He has provided consulting services for the Washington Nationals and many area professional athletes.  He provides team physician services for numerous local high schools and club teams. His practice and research interests focus on sports medicine care for the recreational and professional athlete.

Dr. Johnson has presented and published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on Orthopaedic and sports-related injuries.
